WordPress vs Squarespace

Several clients have asked me why I build all my sites on WordPress and not something like Squarespace.

WordPress is the most used content management system in the world. It’s constantly evolving, and the possibilities are limitless.

Squarespace is hard to compare to WordPress, because it’s almost more comparable to something like Wix or Weebly. It’s more geared toward people who want to attempt to create a website on their own but don’t have the knowledge or skills to use WordPress. It’s not inherently bad, and it can be a very useful platform for someone who enjoys creating their own website, but as a designer I find it to be very limiting in function and form.

Another reason I don’t care for Squarespace is that you can’t host a Squarespace site on your own server or with a hosting company of your choosing — their sites are required to be hosted by Squarespace’s own servers. I like having the freedom of moving to a new host if I’m not satisfied with the service I’m receiving.
